Poppintree Park Wins 2012 LAMA Award for Best Public Park!
Poppintree Park – Public Park – Poppintree Park is a 45 acre park in the heart of Ireland’s most acclaimed urban regeneration project, Ballymun Town Centre. The park has undergone considerable redevelopment over the past 4 years and now features a host of new public amenities. The redesign of the park is the culmination of an extensive public consultation process with local residents, residents associations, local forums, youth groups, sports clubs, and community groups. Installation of Phase 1 of the redevelopment was completed in 2010. In 2012, the park won the LAMA Award for Best Public Park. The value of Phase 1 works exceeds €6 million.
The main park design was undertaken by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd. (the public body set up to oversee the redevelopment of the entire Ballymun area). Mitchell + Associates, Landscape Architects, were appointed to complete the detailed design of the park, prepare Tender (Construction) Drawings, and oversee the installation of all landscape works. In my role as Senior Landscape Architect at Mitchell + Associates, I was responsible for overseeing this work and for completing the detailed design which included extensive wetlands, hardworks, final plant selection, and the detailed playground design. I oversaw the completion of the Tender drawings and was responsible for the oversite of all landscape installation works.
The park now features an array of improved amenities including a Tree Trail highlighting 15 native tree varieties, a vastly improved degree of site biodiversity, extensive wetland and sustainable drainage systems, passive and active recreation, a 1.25 acre playground for 0-12 year olds, an amphitheater and permanent pond, over 50,000 plants, and a completely accessible pathway network which includes extensive seating and viewing areas.
